BBC news has today disclosed that the number of people falling victim to identity theft in the UK has increased by a third.
Criminals increasingly use internet forums to buy and sell data. They use the information to open bank accounts, obtain credit crads and commit fraud in other people’s names. Fraud prevention agency Cifas said the number of victims rose by 31% to over 32,000 in the forst three months of 2015, compared to 2015.
The report primarily refers to personal identity fraud but that is linked directly with workplace data breaches. Under data protection law the ICO can impose penalties of up to £500k on any organisation that fails to safeguard personal information that is holds.
